When it came time to renovate their newly purchased, 1959 mid-century modern home, this client turned to their architect to help them find a contractor with the experience and resourcefulness to fulfill their goal—of optimizing the sweeping Santa Barbara views surrounding their property. The initial objective was to add a second level master bedroom suite, open up and update the existing floor plan, revamp the outdoor spaces, and improve as well as expand the doors and windows.

And, because this client’s primary residence is in New York, they needed someone who could be flexible when scheduling meetings throughout each phase of construction, and more importantly, someone they could trust to get the work done without direct owner supervision. After the consultation and bidding phase, they were optimistic about working with Vinny Arndt and his team (ACI). Client Dru Finley recalls, “Vinny was a pleasure to work with. He established regular, twice weekly meetings via Facetime when we were out of state. Along each step, he encouraged us to provide input and was transparent about our project’s progression.”

OVercoming obstacles

In the beginning, the process was complicated by additional construction projects happening on their street, creating excessive parking congestion within the quiet neighborhood. Fortunately, Vinny was able to successfully communicate with neighbors, letting them know the plan, which allowed for construction to begin smoothly and on time. Throughout the project, Vinny continually provided his ideas and recommendations in order to improve the client’s vision.

Dru says, “He did not stop until all aspects of the project were completed and fulfilled, oftentimes exceeding our expectations.” She adds, “ACI’s workmanship and attention to detail is impeccable! Project subcontractors were chosen with care, each having a keen eye towards achieving excellent results. Vinny was fully involved to ensure that ALL work was done to extremely high standards, as well as to address any unforeseen issues.”

As their renovation was nearing completion, the owners submitted additional project requests which ultimately extended the construction parameters. Despite the additional work, Arndt Construction Inc. delivered this $1.3M home on time and within budget. “Our number one wish was to create a beautiful, functional home, one that would be completed on time and within budget – Vinny exceeded our expectations and we now have our dream home to prove it. We have heard many horror stories of budgets gone wild and jobs that take many months longer than originally anticipated – this will not happen with Arndt Construction Inc. In fact, even with the additional projects we added to the plan, all construction was completed as per the original schedule!”
